Sepsis

Sepsis is a life-threatening (multi)organ failure caused by pathogens and /or their toxins. These toxins or microorganisms leave infected bodily areas and enter the bloodstream. The body tries to defend itself with a vigorous reaction of the immune system – inflammation. This can be followed by a septic shock, which causes a massive drop in blood pressure, and subsequent failure of the circulatory system and various organs.
